Arlene Hannah Tegtmeyer Gerdis, a cherished resident of Colorado Springs since 1980, passed away on February 7, 2024. Born on July 12, 1930, to Carl Tegtmeyer and Hannah Amerson Tegtmeyer in Woden, Iowa. Arlene was born and raised on the family farm with her seven siblings, where she developed a strong work ethic and love for family. She graduated from Woden High School in 1948 and pursued her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

On February 10, 1950, Arlene married the love of her life, Arnold “Arnie” Gerdis. Together, they shared a beautiful journey marked by love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Arnie courted Arlene in the true fashion of their time, often reminiscing about their dates, including trips to the roller rink. The couple resided in Mason City, Iowa, for two years before settling in Algona, Iowa, where they raised their family and built a life together for nearly three decades. In 1980, they relocated to Colorado Springs for health reasons, embracing a new chapter of their lives.

Arlene’s pride and joy were her roles as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She and Arnie lovingly welcomed two children, Lori and James, into their family and hearts through adoption. Arlene treasured the memories of family trips and weekends spent at the lake, cherishing every moment spent with her beloved husband and children. Her daughter Lori and son Jim preceded her in death, along with her husband Arnie, but she found solace in the belief that they would be reunited in heaven.

Throughout her life, Arlene wore many hats, excelling as a teacher, clothing store owner, accountant, county recorder, and nanny. However, her greatest source of pride was her role as a mother and grandmother, leaving a lasting impact on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was always a welcoming haven, offering comfort and support during difficult times. There was always a spot at her table and shelter beneath her roof for her family.

Arlene had a passion for gardening, cultivating the most beautiful flowers in her neighborhood, which became a source of joy for both her and those who passed by. She also had a keen eye for interior design, always on the lookout for the latest trends to adorn her home with style and grace.

Devoted to her faith, Arlene was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Woden, Iowa, during her youth, and continued her involvement with First Lutheran Church in Algona, Iowa, before becoming a cherished member of First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs.

Arlene leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering faith. She is survived by her eight grandchildren (James, Brandon, Justin, Meggan, Stephanie, Merranda, MacAllysen, and Kyla), Sixteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed to have known her warmth and kindness. In her final days, she was surrounded by four generations of her loving family.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to First Lutheran Church for their support and comfort over the past 44 years. Arlene’s memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved hher. A memorial service will be held on February 21, 2024 at 1 PM at 1st Lutheran Church, 1515 N Cascade, Colorado Springs, CO 80907.
