John Herman Mayns

John Herman Mayns was born May 23, 1937, in Denver, Colorado.  He passed away on December 23, 2023, in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the age of 86, after battling Dementia for the last several years of his life.

John is survived by his wife Margaret White-Mayns and his children; John Mayns, Randy Mayns, David Ewing, Julie White-Corbaley, and Brent White. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John was born in Denver on May 23, 1937. He is predeceased by his parents, John Herman Mayns Sr. and Lorita Barbara Brown-Mayns. John grew up in the West Denver area and attended Presentation of Our Lady, Lake Junior High School, and West High School where he graduated in 1955.  John spent his summers at the family cabin in Pine, Colorado where he was an avid fisherman from a young age. John was one of four children and is preceded in death by his brother George Albert (Bud) Mayns and is survived by his sisters Rosalie E. Rogers and Charlotte A. Clay, both of Colorado.

John lived in Colorado until 1968, when he moved to Virginia. He owned a quarter horse farm in the Rixeyville Virgina area. Prior to moving to Virginia John was a car salesman and manager in the Denver area primarily selling Oldsmobile’s. John continued to sell cars in the Virginia  and Washington DC area and also managed a bottling company for a period of time.  John overcame his dependance on alcohol and became a substance abuse counselor while in Virginia.  John remained very active in alcohol anonymous for the remainder of his life, something he was very proud of.  John was known for being friendly to everyone and would always make his presence known with his booming voice and loud laugh.

John returned to Colorado and to the area he loved as a boy and young man.  In the mid 1990’s he began working in the Pike and San Isabel National Forests for a company who managed the campgrounds for the Forest Service.  John actively worked in the Manitou Lake area, until several years ago when he was injured in a car accident. John was happiest in the mountains of Colorado.

A celebration of life ceremony will be planned for this next summer in the Manitou Lake area.  Friends and family will be notified when this takes place.
