1929~2017

Martha May Devine, 87,  died on March 17, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Cause of death was a heart attack. There will be a memorial service in Riverside, CA on May 5. Martha was born in Whittier, CA on May 20, 1929 to Fielding Dupin and Minnie Rimmer Dupin.  She had one brother, Thomas, who preceded her in death. Martha lived in Whittier until her marriage in 1949 to Donald Sutton, a WWII veteran who became a  teacher.  Martha and Don settled in San Bernardino, CA and had three children before their divorce.  She later married Richard Devine, also a veteran and teacher. They had 24 loving years of marriage, living in Riverside, CA,  until Richard’s death in 1997.  Martha worked in the retail business and then in hospital administration in San Bernardino and Riverside. Following her retirement, she volunteered at Kaiser Hospital for 14 years, working into her 80’s. After a bad fall in Jan 2015,  she moved from Riverside to Colorado Springs to be near her daughter and her family.  Martha enjoyed traveling (especially to Maui and Mexico), reading, going to movies and plays,  shopping for clothes and, perhaps most of all, visiting with her friends and family.  She loved the beach, flowers,  and her pets—she always had a dog and a cat or two, many of which she rescued.   She made friends wherever she went, and kept many of them for life.  In Colorado, she was fascinated by snow and the constantly changing weather. Martha appreciated the kind caregivers and the activities at The Bridge Assisted Living, where she resided. She loved spending time with her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Martha is survived by her two sons Mark Sutton (Joan) and Matthew Sutton, a daughter, Susan Bennett, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and by her husband’s three sons, Tom (Kathy), Bob (Mary) and Derek (Michelyn), 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
