Larry Eugene McKinley, 68, of Pueblo, CO, passed away during a rainstorm on May 10, 2026, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born on March 20, 1958, during a rainstorm in Oakland, California, Larry lived a life filled with faith, family, laughter and meaningful contributions to those around him.

Born on the first day of spring, he would remind us all that he brought the sunshine even though it usually stormed on his birthday but he still shined brightly.

A devoted sports fan, Larry found joy in every sport, even Cheerleading, but was especially passionate about basketball, football and baseball. He faithfully supported the Golden State Warriors long before their championship fame and remained a loyal Oakland Raiders and the Oakland A’s fan.

Larry’s faith was central to his life. A founding member of Hope City Church of Colorado and a former dedicated member of Heritage Christian Center, his unwavering devotion to God inspired those around him.

His love for music was eclectic. He loved most genres of music from Golden Oldies, Funkadelic, R&B, Rap, Christian and Country music. He even started to embrace Rock n Roll when his wife would make him listen to it in the car on road trips.

Larry earned an Associates degree in Business and a Certification in Drug and Alcohol Counseling. His career journey began in roofing with his grandfather Lawrence then onto construction but ultimately transitioned to roles that allowed him to profoundly impact others’ lives. He devoted much of his time to drug and alcohol counseling and job placement, helping individuals find hope and rebuild their lives. Larry’s adventurous nature also led him to work a season on a fishing boat in Seattle, adding another chapter to his remarkable life story.

In retirement, Larry embraced life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed fishing, watching horse racing, caring for his yard, relaxing on his porch while listening to music, and shopping for great deals. He spared no expense on fine shoes, clothes, and cologne. His love for horses was rooted in childhood memories of racetrack visits alongside his grandmother Luevenia, a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. He had fond memories of hunting with his grandfather Lawrence.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife Tatia Dokes-McKinley; daughters Crystal McKinley, Domonique McKinley, and Ragine McKinley; bonus daughters Nastaszia Calvin and Shaylynn Calvin; grandchildren Zhaimeer, Naszir, Shiloh, and Sebastian; great-grandchildren Kyeir and Jianna; sister Genia Brown; Grandfather Lawrence Gregg; nieces Antoinette Brown and Victoria Brown; cousins Betina and Angie Dawson; along with other cherished relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lueraine Brown and Freddie Lee McKinley; Grandmother Luevenia Gregg; siblings Vikki Brown, Tonya Brown, and Ruben Brown; niece Loushica Worley; and cousins Rosezina and Jessie Dawson.

Larry’s steadfast love for family and friends defined his life. He deeply valued his relationships, whether as a husband and father or as a proud grandfather of all grandsons and cherished lifelong friendships that spanned decades.

In honor of Larry’s enduring love for horses, donations may be made in his name to an equine rescue or sanctuary. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with wisdom, kindness, humor and faith.
