James “Jim” Robert Peterson

August 27, 1952 – October 7, 2024

Jim Peterson passed away peacefully at home with family on Monday, October 7th, 2024, at age 72, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, following a ten-month battle with brain cancer. He was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, growing up with two sisters, a brother, and a large extended family. He attended college at South Dakota State University. Jim served as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force for 20 years, from 1974 to 1994. While in the US Air Force, he flew many aircraft, including the B-57E, F-106 and F-15 Eagle. He met many lifelong friends including his wife, Joan, while being stationed around the country. After retiring as a Major from the US Air Force, Jim flew for FedEx for 23 years as a commercial pilot, flying internationally until his 65th birthday. He enjoyed swimming, skiing, traveling, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends. Jim was a loving, caring, and supportive husband, father, and grandfather; he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good party. He is survived by his loving wife of over 30 years, Joan; his daughter Megan (Alan) Lundberg-Barker; his sons, Jon (Sarah) Peterson; Joe (Kat) Peterson; David (Tori) Peterson; six grandchildren; and many loving extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and Robert Peterson, first wife Margy (Burgess) Peterson, and brother Doug Peterson.

Services will be held on October 14th at 11am at St. Peter Catholic Church, 55 Jefferson St, Monument, Colorado 80132. He will be laid to rest at Pikes Peak National Cemetery with Military honors.
