He served in the US Army Reserves for six years and worked in the agriculture industry 45 years as the controller at ADM Smoot Grain and Hannebaum Grain companies in Salina until his retirement in 2010.  He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Salina, and was active in the Central Kansas and Pikes Peak amateur radio leagues, call sign NØXRS.

Family was always most important to Virgil’s heart. He loved amateur radio and the friends he met through multiple radio clubs and HAM activities in both Kansas and Colorado.  He loved to fish, watch old comedies and westerns on TV, and was an avid sports fan of KU Basketball and the Denver Broncos.  Music was always a part of his life; Virgil loved listening to oldies and the playlist he and Patty created on their Alexa. He loved to work on cars and was skilled in fixing things around the house.  Throughout his life, Virgil enjoyed camping, sitting by the campfire and traveling with Patty, daughters and friends throughout the USA including Alaska and Hawaii and to Canada.

Virgil’s surviving family include his wife Patty of the home; daughters, RaShelle (Mike) Hindman of Longmont, CO; Kim (Curtis) Pogue of Colorado Springs; sister and brother-in-law Joan and Ron Peterson of Alton; sister- and brother-in-law Pam and Steve Michel of Salina; 3 grandsons — Chase, Brady and Connor — and 4 nieces and nephews and their families.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
