1928 ~ 2020

On Thursday, May 14th, 2020, Mary Irene Souza, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away at the age of 91.

Mary was born on August 22, 1928 in Honolulu Hawaii, to Leonard and Annie Ing Fung, (who passed during child birth).  Mary was raised by her loving father and stepmother, Mollie Alan Lau.  In 1950, Mary married Gilbert “Joe” Souza.  Mary and Joe went on to adopt their only child, son Gilbert Jess Souza in December, 1957.

Mary lived her life with a God and family-first conviction while fully embracing and loving her Hawaiian upbringing.  Mary always kept a sign at the entrance to her house that is simple in nature but also a deeper look into the woman Mary was, “This is an American home ran Hawaiian style. Take off your shoes and stay awhile.” Her passion was to provide unconditional love and support to her family, friends, and all animals on God’s green Earth, which she fulfilled throughout her entire life.  It would be remiss if it wasn’t mentioned that Mary’s secondary passion was Hawaiian cuisine.  Mary loved her local food, and would go to any extent to savor it.  Her love and compassion will be felt by many for a very long time, and her beautiful Aloha spirit will live inside her family and friends forever.

Mary was preceded in death by her grandson Robert Christopher Souza, her parents, husband Joe, and many loving relatives and friends who loved her dearly. She is survived by her son Jess, her three grandchildren:  John, Alex, and Brian, and great grandchildren: Christopher, Dylan, Payton, Jayden and Stella.
