Shirley Lou Maynard, age 86, passed away in Colorado Springs on Sunday, October 1, 2017.

She was born on September 11, 1931 in Barberton, OH.  She grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and Akron, OH, and was a graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School, Cuyahoga Falls, OH. She attended Nyack College in Nyack, New York, where she met her husband, Rev. Hugh “Bud” Maynard. She later attended Kent State University in Ohio. Shirley and Bud were married on August 4, 1951.

She co-labored with Bud, focusing on youth and women’s ministries, while pastoring churches in New York, Maryland and Ohio spanning thirty years. In addition, Shirley also taught French at all grade levels at Chapel Hill Christian School in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, for several years and served at the National Office of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in the Alliance Youth Corp (AYC) office, preparing young people for future missionary work. She attended Church on the Ranch in Colorado Springs.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, James and Selma Barker, and her sister, Betty Jean Morgan.  She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bud Maynard; daughters Vickie [Leonard] Mann of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter Carrie [Robert] Buchan of Castle Rock, CO; granddaughter Courtney [Doug] Oliphant of North Hollywood, CA; grandson Kyle Buchan of Santa Maria, CA; sister Elaine [Robert] Geiselman of Alliance, OH; nieces Debra [Rex] Person of Fort Wayne, IN; Laurie [Randy] Oyster of Alliance, OH and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Shirley’s lifelong faith in Jesus Christ was not theoretical but a living faith in a living Savior. She reaffirmed her understanding that, “For the believer who has been to the Cross, death is no frightful leap in the dark, but is the entrance into a glorious new life.  For the believer, the brutal fact of death has been conquered by the historical resurrection of Jesus Christ.  For the person who has turned from sin and received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, death is not the end.” [Rev. Billy Graham] Shirley’s passing leaves an enormous void in the lives of many of us and we will dearly miss her until we meet again in Heaven.  We thank God for the gift of her life and for the blessing of all the years we spent with her.  “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”  John 11:25

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the members of the Abode Hospice of Colorado Springs. Their dedication and effort to provide quality care over the last two months were a blessing to the family.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Church On The Ranch, 3685 Jeannine Drive, Colorado Springs, CO. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to

the OASIS youth program at Church on the Ranch, recognizing Shirley’s life-long ministry and counseling to young people.
