Where the Huckleberries Grew

Sometimes when I am musing in a dreamy sort of way,

I live with those I used to know back in another day,

I wander ‘long the same old road, where, in the summertime,

Old Nature sang her sweetest tune, in perfect, ringing rhyme.

My feet, let loose, find sweet relief and drink of Heaven’s dew-

As I run through the woodlands where the huckleberries grew.

I see a checkered apron and a bonnet tied with strings.

I hear a voice which thrills me, as soft and sweet it sings.

Then I hold a hand which trembled, as in the days of old,

When she sat fondly list’ning to the wondrous tales I told.

So, I live each moment over, and feel each joy anew

When dreamingly I loiter where the huckleberries grew.

Now you may have the city life with all its heat and glare;

Its tinsel and its hustle, and its worry everywhere;–

But let me turn my footsteps through ‘tis only in a dream,

Where lips of red speak words of love, and eyes of gladness gleam;

Down through the flow’ring meadow lanes, neath skies of brightest hue,

Into the shaded woodlands where the huckleberries grew.
